How Mega Evolution works in Pokémon Champions doubles — the best Megas to use, how to build around your Mega, and common Mega Evolution mistakes.
Mega Evolution is one of the most powerful tools in Pokémon Champions. A Mega Pokémon gains massively increased stats and often a new ability, turning it into a completely different competitive force.
To Mega Evolve, your Pokémon must hold its corresponding Mega Stone. During team selection, you choose to Mega Evolve at the same time you select a move. Mega Evolution happens at the start of the turn, before moves execute — even before slower Pokémon move.
Crucially: one Mega per battle. Once a Pokémon on your team Mega Evolves, no other Pokémon on your team can do so that match, even if you have multiple Mega-capable Pokémon in your team of 6.
Your Mega is your win condition. Build the rest of your team to support and protect it. Common support includes:
⚠️ Watch out: Your Mega holds its Mega Stone, so it can't hold any other item. Design your spread and movepool knowing you won't have a Life Orb, Choice Band, or defensive berry.
Choose based on your team's archetype. Sun teams almost always want Mega Charizard Y. Balanced offense benefits from Mega Kangaskhan or Mega Lopunny. Trick Room can use Mega Gengar as a fast non-TR attacker to pivot out of TR if needed.
Can you have two Mega Evolutions on one team in Pokémon Champions?
No. Only one Pokémon per team can Mega Evolve per battle. However, you can bring multiple Mega-capable Pokémon on your team of 6 — only one can Mega Evolve per match.
When does Mega Evolution happen?
Mega Evolution triggers at the start of the turn, before any moves are executed. The Mega Evolution and the move are declared at the same time.
Does Mega Evolution change type?
Some Megas change typing, yes. Mega Charizard X becomes Fire/Dragon, Mega Charizard Y stays Fire/Flying. Mega Gengar stays Ghost/Poison. Always check the Pokémon's detail page.
