Charizard's two mega forms split the format. Mega X is Fire and Dragon with Tough Claws, favouring close-range physical sets with Outrage, Flare Blitz, and Earthquake. Mega Y is Fire and Flying with Drought, setting Sun for a turn and turning Heat Wave plus Solar Beam into a spread-damage sweeper.
The decision between them is a team-archetype decision, not a Charizard decision. Mega Y belongs on Sun teams where Drought is the win condition and the partner is Torkoal or another Sun abuser. Mega X belongs on physical setups where Tough Claws Flare Blitz is the unlock and the partner is a defensive Steel or Dragon type. Without a Mega Stone, Charizard is replaceable. With one, the form choice locks in the rest of the team's identity. Pelipper and Tyranitar are the meta weather setters that punish the wrong call.
