How Aerodactyl plays
Aerodactyl is a tempo Pokémon. Tailwind on turn one with Pressure denies four turns of opposing speed control, and the Stone Edge plus Wide Guard combination forces opponents into reactive play. Unnerve on the secondary ability slot locks down Sitrus and Salac timing, which matters more than the percentage suggests in matchups where defensive Pokémon rely on berry triggers.
The standard set is Tailwind, Stone Edge, Wide Guard, and either Whirlwind for Tailwind extension or Taunt as the fourth slot. Mind Blown is occasionally seen for Steel-type counterplay but the recoil rarely pays off. Counter-Aerodactyl is a known problem. Rocky Helmet on a contact-defender wins the contact-move trade, and any priority user (Sucker Punch, Shadow Sneak) bypasses the Tailwind speed advantage entirely. Aerodactyl that does not get the Tailwind off is rarely worth its slot.
