👁️ How to Read Team Preview Like a Pro in Pokémon Champions

Team preview is where most Pokémon Champions matches are won or lost. Learn how to identify your opponent's win condition, choose your 4, and pick leads that put you ahead before turn 1.

Team preview is the most underrated skill in competitive doubles. Most players spend it thinking about leads. The best players spend it figuring out what their opponent wants to do and picking 4 Pokémon specifically designed to stop it.

Step 1: Identify the Win Condition

Every team has a win condition. It's the Pokémon or combination that, if it does its job, wins the game. Look for patterns:

  • Weather setter + abuser pair: Torkoal + Charizard, Pelipper + Kingdra. Deny the weather, you deny the gameplan.
  • Trick Room setter + slow attacker: Hatterene + Snorlax. Prevent TR from going up and the slow attacker is a liability.
  • Setup sweeper with redirect: Flutter Mane + Amoonguss. The attacker needs protection to do anything. Remove the redirect user and it becomes targetable.
  • Single all-in attacker: Mega Kangaskhan with a lot of support. Everything revolves around keeping it healthy and positioned.

Step 2: Identify Their Support and Speed Control

After spotting the win condition, look for how they protect it. This is usually a Fake Out user (Incineroar), redirect support (Amoonguss, Clefable), or speed control (Whimsicott for Tailwind, Hatterene for TR). These are the Pokémon you want to disrupt.

Step 3: Choose Your 4 With a Plan

Your 4 Pokémon should have an answer to their win condition and a way to execute your own. Don't bring redundant coverage. Think: if they lead X and Y, what's my answer?

💡 Tip: Almost every team has 2-3 'safe' 4-Pokémon selections. Spend preview identifying which of your selections is weakest to their team. If you can't find a bad selection, you built a good team.

Step 4: Pick Your Leads

Leads matter because they set up tempo for the entire match. Typically you want leads that either disrupt their setup (Fake Out the TR setter, Taunt their redirect) or establish your own plan (set weather, Tailwind, or position your attacker safely).

  • If they have TR: lead Taunt or a fast Fake Out to prevent the setter from going up
  • If they have Tailwind: lead your own speed control answer or a tanky pivot
  • If they have Fake Out: lead a Ghost-type or Protect user
  • If they have Amoonguss: lead Safety Goggles Incineroar so Spore fails

Common Team Preview Mistakes

  • Deciding your lead before identifying their 4 picks (they might not even bring their most threatening Pokémon)
  • Bringing 4 with overlapping type weaknesses against the opponent's spread moves
  • Always bringing the same 4 regardless of matchup
  • Ignoring their back row — the Pokémon they save often come in to clean up after your leads are depleted

Frequently Asked Questions

What is team preview in Pokémon Champions?

Team preview is the phase before each match where both players see all 6 of their opponent's Pokémon before choosing which 4 to bring and how to lead.

What should you look for in team preview?

Identify the opponent's speed control, their primary damage threat, and their support Pokémon. Then pick your 4 and lead based on what their likely win condition is.

How do you decide which 4 to bring?

Bring the 4 Pokémon that best address the opponent's core strategy. Usually that means at least one that threatens their main attacker, one that handles their support, and a reliable speed control answer.
